Link Group Ltd. was amongst 26 Lanarkshire-based organisations which recently demonstrated their commitment to tackling stigma experienced by people with mental health problems by taking part in the largest simultaneous ‘see me’ pledge signing at Hamilton Academicals FC.
This local initiative, which now involves over 50 Lanarkshire organisations, challenges the stigma associated with mental ill-health and aims to eliminate the discrimination experienced by those with mental health problems With so many local employers making a stand, ‘see me’ has a particular focus on tackling workplace stigma and discrimination.
Mental illness is now the most common cause of absence in the workplace and one in three people who have taken time off work because of a mental health problem have felt pressured to provide an alternative reason for their sick leave. Taking and keeping a job has consistently been shown as a key life goal, and the confidence and self esteem employment provides is key to emotional wellbeing and good mental health.
Representatives from each of the organisations were joined by Linda Dunion, Campaign Director of ‘see me’ who said: “The tremendous level of enthusiasm in Lanarkshire is invaluable in promoting anti-stigma messages. Fear of other people’s reactions often prevents people who experience mental health problems from seeking help and support in the workplace, or from applying for jobs for which they are qualified. By reducing the stigma we will make it easier for everyone to speak more openly about mental health problems.”
Craig Sanderson, Chief Executive of Link Group, said: “Link is delighted to sign this pledge. For 25 years we have offered support to tenants and other residents who have mental health issues and we now commit to addressing similar challenges in the workplace.
“I am disappointed, however, that Link appears to be the only Registered Social Landlord which has signed the ‘see me’ pledge, not just in Lanarkshire but in the whole of Scotland. I hope this is not because of a lack of interest or commitment amongst colleagues in the movement.”
