Couple thanks Link after £12,000 benefit income boost

May 2008

Glasgow couple Robert and Barbara McCaw have expressed their gratitude to the Linkwide Advice Team after receiving help to claim disability benefits that have increased their income by a huge £12,000 a year.

The Advice Team, which advises Link tenants on welfare rights and debt issues, helped Robert and Barbara to identify all the benefits to which they were entitled after Barbara suffered a heart attack and stroke. Before becoming aware that they were eligible for Attendance Allowance and other benefits, the couple had been struggling on a very low income. Now, they have enough money coming in to ensure that Barbara receives the care and support she needs.

Robert, 72, and Barbara, 70, of Hope Street, are among more than 1,000 people to have received advice from the team over the last year. Between April 2007 and the end of March 2008, benefit income totalling £906,000 was generated thanks to the team, while advice was given on clients' debt totalling £543,000.

Whether offering assistance with benefits, day-to-day budgeting, advice on debt and bankruptcy or any aspect of welfare, the team offers services that can alleviate worry and improve a person's quality of life.

Robert wrote to the team recently to express his thanks for the help he and his wife received from Advice Team member Elizabeth Pope.

He said: "We are both OAPs and did not have a clue how to go about applying for this benefit so we phoned Link's office.  They came quickly to our assistance by visiting us at home and filling in all the complicated forms and made several phone calls to the right people. As a result my wife was awarded the allowance she was due.  We can't thank Elizabeth enough for all the time and effort she put into helping us and would urge any other pensioners in similar situations to get in touch with Link."

Link's Chief Executive Craig Sanderson said: "We not only provide affordable housing, but are committed to the 'wider role' work of ensuring the communities living in the homes we offer are strong, sustainable and secure. It's rewarding to see that the Advice Team is clearly providing a much-needed service and very gratifying to know that the team's hard work is making a real and positive difference to many of our tenants' lives."
