LinkLiving's Smart Move volunteers Riding high

Young volunteers from LinkLiving’s Falkirk-based Smart Move project helped make history last weekend when they took part in the Riding to celebrate the opening of the third session of the Scottish Parliament.

The team were at the front of the 1200-strong procession down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to the Parliament building, where the Queen addressed MSPs.

Smart Move was selected to take its sought-after place in the procession in recognition of the volunteers' work to tackle youth homelessness in Falkirk and the surrounding area. Since its launch at the end of 2005, the project has recruited 11 volunteer peer educators, all of whom have been homeless themselves, who devise and deliver educational sessions in schools and at youth events.

The volunteers are currently developing a programme that will be delivered to young men participating in a personal development programme in Polmont Young Offenders Institution.

Project co-ordinator Irene Blackburn said: “The volunteers were ecstatic at being chosen to take part in the Riding and the rain on the day did nothing to dampen their spirits. We had a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see the volunteers’ commitment and hard work recognised.”
