LinkLiving, a voluntary organisation that supports people in Fife, Edinburgh, Mid and East Lothian and Falkirk, is inviting everyone they support along the launch of a new film and booklet about the effects of Supporting People (SP) on January 26.
In October '04, the Communities Minster announced that there would be reductions in the SP Funding Programme. Since then, further reductions have been announced to reduce the massive overspend in the projected budgets made by Westminster.
Although there was concern about the idea of spreading panic about people's support, the reductions in funding were a reality and there was an obligation to share this information. However, the group that did meet, shared their energy and feelings of anger and worry, and were able to bring their own ideas about how to respond.
The group decided to make a film and booklet - stories about their lives and the benefits of support. Making the film and booklet, Lives Behind Labels, was a rewarding experience for everyone. The group wanted the film to be hard-hitting and emotional, but backed up with facts. With the help and sponsorship from LinkLiving and the Edinburgh College of Art, it certainly did that.
Susan Johnston one of the organisers of Lives Behind Labels said: "Everyone needs support at some point in their lives, but some people need to get their support from voluntary organisations like LinkLiving."
The message of support seen in Lives Behind Labels deserves to be seen and heard, so a Launch was planned in the Scottish Parliament, sponsored by Sarah Boyack MSP (Edinburgh Central). Elaine Johnston, Director of LinkLiving, will chair the launch.
Susan Johnston, David White and Martyn McCorack will be on the platform, representing all those other service users who have given their time and thought, by talking about their experiences.
The Launch will be held in the Scottish Parliament building, Holyrood, Edinburgh between 12 noon and 2pm. A buffet lunch will be available at 12.00. Copies of the DVD and the report will be available at the launch.
