Work is about to begin to clear three rundown sites in Barrhead town centre to make way for a £6m development of affordable housing by Link Group.
Link has purchased three adjacent sites: the former petrol station, car repair garage and town house on John Street; the former blacksmith's yard on Cross Arthurlie Street and the empty site on Henry Street. Demolition and clearance works of all the existing buildings will begin on or around January 8. Construction of the new homes is expected to start in June 2007.
There will be some disruption to traffic for the duration of the demolition work, which is expected to last two to three weeks. In conjunction with East Renfrewshire Council, the demolition contractor will work closely with nearby residents and shop owners to ensure disruption is kept to minimum.
Link's new development will consist of 57 quality, affordable flats for sale and rent. There will be a mixture of three- and four-storey buildings with not only general needs flats but also amenity homes. There will also be a small number of flats for people who use a wheelchair. Measures include the use of domestic wind turbines, district heating systems, effective insulation and, where possible, south facing windows.
Link will also create an informal and welcoming parkland and recreational space around the development, which will also offer an ideal habitat for birds and other wildlife. The development will take place in three stages, taking around two years to complete.
Craig Sanderson, Chief Executive of Link Group, said: "Link will create quality, affordable and sustainable housing for rent and sale, surrounded by an attractive 'nature walk' area. We have consulted closely with the council, the community council and other agencies in the local area to ensure that this development, Link's first in East Renfrewshire, will meet the needs of its residents and be an attractive place to live, as well as generally improving the centre of Barrhead."
