Efforts by the Link group to provide affordable housing and support community regeneration in the Kirkshaws area of North Lanarkshire will be marked with a triple celebration on Thursday 8 February 2007.
Link will host an event at the Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre to recognise three projects which it has established in partnership with the local community and other partners:
The opening of the Kirkshaws Dental Practice
In an effort to improve access to health services locally, Link and NHS Lanarkshire worked together to support the development of the new dental practice. Funding was made available by Communities Scotland, the North Lanarkshire Partnership and Link Group. The project complements Link Group's development of affordable housing in the area and is indicative of Link's approach to holistic regeneration measures.
The completion of 18 homes to the Larach standard
The Dunure Street development - a mixture of cottage flats and semi detached houses - is the first to be completed by Link as part of the Larach Alliance, a consortium of six Registered Social Landlords that works to deliver quality affordable homes according to a shared set of principles and practices.
The development of a healthy eating café in Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre
Linkwide worked with the Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre to assist it in meeting its aim of remodelling the Centre's cafeteria with a renewed emphasis on healthy eating. The new café includes a food retail section selling good wholesome food for a healthy diet at competitive prices. The £25,000 project - supported by Wider Role grant from Communities Scotland - will also offer the centre improved opportunities to support up to 24 local people a year to learn basic food preparation and food hygiene skills.
Jim Smith, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council; Ian Mitchell, Director of Regeneration at Communities Scotland and Margie Taylor, Consultant in Dental Public Health at NHS Lanarkshire will attend the event as guest speakers and will unveil a commemorative plaque at the dental practice.
Craig Sanderson, Chief Executive of Link Group said: "We are proud to have been able to help regenerate Kirkshaws not only by providing quality, affordable housing, but also by helping to develop much needed services for local people. The range of the projects in which we have been involved locally illustrates Link's commitment not just to providing bricks and mortar development, but also to the provision of healthy, sustainable communities."
Roger Popplewell, Communities Scotland's area director for south west Scotland said: "These innovative projects are excellent examples of a forward-looking housing association, working in partnership with local agencies, taking a wider role in the community. This means they can bring benefits to local people in addition to providing high-quality housing services."
