New start for Dalmuir

Friday 10 August will herald a new beginning for the Dalmuir estate in Clydebank, with the official launch of the Link-led regeneration project to bring 114 new, affordable homes to the area.

Des McNulty MSP will join community members and Link Group in celebrating the beginning of the first phase of the multi-million pound project.  Link has worked closely with the community and local partners to develop a plan for the comprehensive regeneration of the area that will see 292 obsolete properties replaced with a new scheme of lower density housing.

During Phase One of the regeneration project, two new four-storey blocks will be built on Jellicoe Street, while low-rise houses with gardens will be built along the south side of Castle Street and Beatty Street. Each of the 31 new homes - including two properties suitable for wheelchair users - will be allocated to existing Dalmuir residents at affordable rents.

In preparation for Phase 1B of the project, tenants in two tenement blocks in Beatty Street are currently relocating to other Link flats in Dalmuir. The vacated blocks will be demolished later this year to make way for a further 11 new houses. Like most of the original flats in Dalmuir, many of which have already been demolished, the Beatty Street properties are in very poor condition, with residents suffering problems including dampness, sagging floors, inadequate heating systems and a lack of thermal and noise insulation.

Craig Sanderson, Chief Executive of Link Group said: "We are working with the local community and partner agencies to meet the need for quality, affordable homes for the people of Dalmuir. The housing mix of the new scheme will ensure that those who are less mobile can access their homes more easily and  families can enjoy more spacious properties with gardens. The high quality design and specification will minimise fuel poverty while the whole project will ensure that the local community can thrive - now and in the future."
